book club report

On Monday they had the kick off meeting for the building's Book Club. Rumor had it that the Social Committee was taking bets on how many people would show. Sounded like they were figuring on about 4 people. Well, 14 showed up! Quite a mix too.

I'd say it was about 50/50 on the male/female ratio (which is a big deal as in our Border's Book Club back in Austin B was pretty much the only guy there). Ages raged from 20-something to over 50-something. Varied tastes in books. Everything from fiction and non-fiction to sci-fi and historical biographies. One woman had just finished writing her first novel and one of the men went from lawyer to writer for Nolo press.

About a quarter of the people had lived in the building over 10 years, while the majority had lived here only a few months. We were about in the middle. The woman who had lived her the longest was actually moving to one of the new buildings in town. It is adjacent to the Amtrak station. We had gotten a postcard in the mail that afternoon inviting us to stop by (and buy). Two bedrooms starting at 400K -- the views can't be nearly as good, and those trains run all hours of the day and night. Ugh!

So we are meeting on Monday to discuss a book that we like. I think people were hoping for a social outlet. We'll see how it goes.

Oh, and I brought brownies, and will know forever be known as the brownie girl. I suppose I have been called worse. And if they ever saw this site, I would probably be banned.
