so you got a phone call

congratulations...chicago welcomes you

The phone calls have started to go out for round one admissions to the class of 2007. “Our” phone call occurred on our way to Los Angeles. We were both in the car, just about to get on the freeway. Thankfully I was driving, or I imagine there could have been an accident. It is just a very exciting event.

It seemed back then that it would take forever for September to roll around, but believe me when I said it went by in the blink of an eye. If you can afford to (and really there are few that can't), I think the idea of quitting your job sooner than later is a good one. Taking some time off, especially to spend with those you care about is important. Soon you really won’t have time. And yes, the fall really will be here before you know it.

For the (female) partners I’d suggest shopping the sales, especially if you are moving from a warm climate. A good winter coat (or two: one wool and one down) is a must have. Also gloves, scarves, and hats: several sets as something is sure to get wet (or lost). Sweaters aren’t a bad idea either. Oh, and long underwear and cashmere socks. And boots. Ugh.

For the home, a heavy down comforter and flannel sheets will help you get though those long winter nights. January is a great time to take advantage of white sales, so act fast.

You may also look at your formal wear. This isn’t usually something you think about as you contemplate returning to the life of a student, but it is something you will need. Truly I had no idea.

You can never go wrong with a little black dress, except maybe at the winter formal. You might consider something with a little length and sleeves as you may need to spend some time outside in six or more inches of snow while wearing it. Just a thought. Pick him up an extra nice tie or two while you are out there -- those always come in handy.

It’s never too soon to start purging and packing. Start looking for boxes and all those other packing supplies. Try and figure out what you really need to take with you. The key to figuring out how you are moving is knowing how much stuff you are taking. Also start thinking about using all the extra food in your pantry (and cleaning and paper products and other such that really isn't worth moving).

It’s also never too soon to start learning about the local culture. I highly recommend Not For Tourists: Chicago. This book has everything you need to know about the neighborhoods, down to the local grocery stores, banks, video stores and even hardware stores. It also shows the various El lines and stops so you can figure out how to get around very easily. It will be the best twelve dollars you ever spent.

For those with children, this book, City Baby Chicago, looks like a good bet. Again, for less than fifteen bucks, how can you go wrong? There has to be something worth while in there that will save you at least that much in time and headaches.

And of course, look out for information about Admit Weekend. The first one is the first weekend in March. Leave me a comment if you are coming. I’ll be there representing the partner’s club.

Now the fun really begins!
